Literacy is more than reading and writing. It’s about having the understanding and confidence to use various skills. Literacy is essential to daily activities at home, at work and in the community; to achieving our goals and developing our knowledge and potential.

There is a literacy component to most key aspects of daily life health, financial, and relational to name a few. Literacy also encompasses essential skills such as communication, finding information, and time management.

Adult literacy is for people aged 19 years or older (in some cases, younger) who are looking to develop their reading, writing, math, digital and other skills. Many adults engage in literacy programs with the goal of furthering their education, apprenticeship training, employment or independence.

Programs in Ontario help adult learners build skills in 6 competency areas:

  • Find and Use Information
  • Communicate Ideas and Information
  • Understand and Use Numbers
  • Use Digital Technology
  • Manage Learning
  • Engage with Others
